DANCE SHOES:
On Kauai your best bet is to find a pair of comfortable shoes that have enough backing to keep them on your feet for dancing. Take them to have a dance sole put on.

Otherwise you can order shoes online from numerous sites. I usually order a couple of sizes to make sure, and return the ones that don't fit, unless I can find someone here who is happy to buy them. Compare prices since dance shoes aren't cheap and there are less expensive sites. When you search, confirm the shipping price and method (DON'T let them send Parcel Post - that goes by boat!) And make sure they have a return policy. Suede soles are the best, however, you can only wear them on the dance floor. Consider getting a dance shoe brush to keep the suede in good shape.
Here are some sites that I have used or others have used with success. Let me know if there are other sources we should include here.
A Little About Basic Dance Etiquette:
(These are just my views)
I've noticed that it takes very little for people to get discouraged from attending classes and dancing. So let's do out best to encourage everyone so we all have more fun!
In general: the obvious: everyone appreciates it when we all bathe, use deodorant, brush our teeth and/or use breath fresheners throughout the evening and make sure our hands are washed. Don't use strong perfume or cologne. If you sweat bring a towel to dry off and perhaps an extra shirt to change into. It is also a good idea to use a hand sanitizer after dancing.
In class: refrain from "helping" your parnter unless they specifically ask for it. It's best when there is a question to objectively ask the teacher. Please leave cell phones off. Leave alcohol consumption for after class.
When out dancing: Follow line of dance when appropriate. Be aware of navigating within dance area; especially when crowded keep in tighter and perhaps save the "big" moves for less crowded floors. Refrain from teaching on the dance floor (unless someone asks specifically, then do so off on the side.) It's OK for ladies to ask guys to dance (sometimes you don't dance unless you ask) And guys be sure to reach out and ask the new dancers and newcomers to dance - most of you do great at that!
A word about patronage: Already dancers have a reputation for not being money makers at night clubs since most of us don't drink (much) alcohol. Let's all remember to patronize the establishment. They have costs to run the place (most places sell bottled water, juice or other non-alcoholic beverages.) Mainly, the staff depends on gratuity for their wage so please remember to take care of them.
